Today, representative from DEPA participated in the half day seminar organized by the IENE (Institute of Energy of S.E. Europe) and the Greek-Albanian Chamber of Industry and Commerce, titled “Energy Policies & Strategies in SE EUROPE and the role of Albania”.
During the seminar, Mr. Dimitrios Manolis, International Projects Monitoring Director, stressed the role that Greece and DEPA can play, through their international interconnections, in the security of natural gas supply in the South Eastern Europe and the gasification of Western Balkans.
DEPA’s representative noted that the Albanian market is in need of new supply sources in order to satisfy the forecasted natural gas demand, and linking Albania to the international gas network through the ITGI system will allow Albania to sufficiently cover these needs in the best way possible, since it will be able to utilise all the existing and future infrastructures of Greece to its advantage.
Albania would be placed in a position to significantly contribute to the energy community of the region and its goals through the two possible gas storages, one in the salt dome in Drumrea and the other in the depleted gas field in Divjaka.
Finally, DEPA presented the idea of a regional gas aggregator, a commercial company which is already being planned in parallel to their Interconnector Greece Bulgaria (IGB) project. Albania would be a welcome participant in this idea which would further enhance the diversification of supply in the SEE as well as address the need for gasification in such a way that would ensure the support of the World Bank. Albania has the unique opportunity to put itself in a position to benefit from a diversified supply source and from being an active part of the integrated transparent gas market of the region.
